"travel Insurance For High-risk Destinations: Australia's Preparedness"
"travel Insurance For High-risk Destinations: Australia's Preparedness" - To determine whether you are "covered" by normal travel insurance, we need to look at this in terms of both the activities you do and the places you travel to—many of these details can be found in the "fine print" of your insurance contract.
Many international credit cards offer their holders travel insurance provided that the trip is 1) shorter than a certain time, 2) the credit card is used to purchase transportation (flights) for the trip, 3) the trip does not go to any country where there is a government warning about travel permit issued by your country of residence, and 4) you are not participating in activities deemed too dangerous as stated in the policy fine print (this includes even relatively common activities such as scuba diving).

So you might be thinking... I'm traveling to one of the countries on the "avoid" list of the US, Canadian, UK or Australian (etc.) governments. What now? Or, I participate in certain activities that exclude me from the usual insurance, what can I do to be properly insured?
There are several companies that specialize in offering high risk travel insurance, depending on where you are traveling, for what purpose and what type of activity you will be doing.
For tourism in so-called "high-risk" destinations, there are several providers that offer comprehensive policies that include not only travel insurance but also kidnapping insurance, ransom return insurance, air safety evacuation and more. While these policies are certainly more expensive than your average travel insurance, they are not unaffordable either. High-risk travel insurance plans start around $100 for a two-week trip, and for more comprehensive coverage, you can expect to pay around $300.

For Americans, one company we have used recently is Global Underwriters, as they were able to offer us plans that included special risk insurance products as well as waive the exclusions that normally apply to countries where travel advisories are issued. We never applied to them, so I can't speak to that, but in terms of their policy, they were able to offer our US clients coverage for travel to Yemen and Afghanistan.

Here's why multiple individual policies can sometimes be preferred over individual group travel insurance policies. Those traveling in a group – such as a family – have the option of covering everyone under one group travel insurance policy or insuring each individual separately. It seems intuitive that a group policy may offer better value compared to multiple individual policies – and in most cases this may be true. A simple policy price comparison, for example, could easily convince you to choose a group policy, even if the margin is only a few dollars. But when it comes to the scope of coverage, you should think carefully. Here are some situations where it might actually be beneficial to buy multiple travel insurance policies instead of one group policy. When traveling with extended family When buying travel insurance with family cover, it's important to know how the policy provider defines 'family'. In most cases, family refers to husband, wife and their biological or legally adopted children. This means that helpers, grandparents, cousins and adult siblings are not considered eligible for family insurance. Some policies even have a limit on the number of children covered by family insurance. When you're traveling with older people, they're more likely to have pre-existing health conditions – which aren't covered by most standard group travel insurance policies. For example, a grandmother might have a pre-existing heart condition. If she is covered by a family or group policy and suffers a heart attack while on vacation, she may not be eligible to claim medical expenses related to her pre-existing condition. Alternatively, if she has her own travel policy that covers pre-existing medical conditions, she would be covered. When traveling to high-risk destinations, group travel policies will always have a limit on the sum insured. This figure is usually less than the total amount that could be insured if multiple individual travel policies were purchased. For example, see this clause in one of the plans offered by Insurance Provider A: Example of Claim Limits for Group Policies with Insurance Provider A. For a Level 3 subscriber, the total sum insured under family coverage is $15,000 – the same amount as 2 adults $7,500 each, leaving no room for additional requests for children. There is also a clause that says there is a maximum requirement of one mobile device per trip under family insurance. If you are traveling to a high-risk destination with a higher likelihood of luggage being stolen or lost, it may be worth your while to maximize the total amount you can claim by purchasing multiple individual travel policies. Under Insurer B's family plan, for example, there is a cap on the total amount that can be claimed. The family limit is roughly equal to the total amount for 2 adults and 1 elderly person, regardless of family size. Medical Exclusions and Claim Limits for Family Plan to Insurance Provider B. When you travel with a group of friends The thing about group travel insurance policies is that they provide blanket coverage for everyone included in the policy for a set number of dates only. This means that the departure and arrival dates for everyone in the group must be the same. So if, say, a couple wants to extend their trip or detour to another country before reuniting with the group, they won't be able to do so under the terms of the group policy. In such cases, purchasing individual policies will offer more flexibility, especially when travelers are not too dependent on each other. Conclusion There are several factors that go into choosing the right travel insurance for your needs. Before purchasing a family or group travel insurance policy, it is important to read the fine print on claim limits. There are also exclusions as to what constitutes loss and injury. If a group policy for up to 5 people costs $75, that's $15 per person. It might be worth paying a bit more to buy individual policies. Read this next: 6 Times You Wish You'd Bought Travel Insurance.
