"family-friendly Travel Insurance Plans For An Australian Vacation"
Many travelers have strong opinions about whether or not to purchase travel insurance. However, the purpose of this post is not to determine whether it is worth the investment. Instead, it compares some travel insurance providers and policies so you can decide which travel insurance option is best for you.
Travel Insurance Included
Of course, since the coronavirus is an ongoing concern, it's important to understand whether your travel insurance covers the pandemic. Some policies will cover you if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and have proof of illness from a doctor. Others take coverage a step further by covering additional types of pandemic-related expenses and cancellations.
However, be aware that each policy will have features and limitations that may limit coverage. For example, fear of travel is not usually a covered reason to cancel or interrupt travel, and special conditions may apply to travel warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
So, before buying a particular policy, you should understand the full terms and conditions and the insurer's specific warnings about COVID-19. You may want to purchase an additional cancellation for any reason, which is available for some comprehensive policies. You pay more for this protection, but it allows you to cancel your trip for any reason and get some of your expenses back. Note that this benefit is time-sensitive and has other requirements, so not all travelers will qualify.
In this guide, we'll review several policies from the best travel insurance providers so you can better understand your options before choosing the policy and provider that best meets your wants and needs.
Is Travel Insurance Worth It?
A number of details were considered to compile this list of the best travel insurers: favorable ratings from TPG Lounge members, availability of information about policies and the online claims process, positive online ratings and the ability to purchase policies in most of the US. states. You can also search for options from these (and other) providers through an insurance comparison site like InsureMyTrip.
When comparing insurance providers, I priced a single trip policy for a week's vacation in Istanbul at $2,000 per provider. I used my actual age and location to get the quotes. As a result, you may see a different price when getting a quote, and even additional policies related to travel insurance regulations that vary from state to state.
TPG Lounge receives a lot of positive feedback from readers who filed a lawsuit against AIG Travel Guard. AIG offers three plans online that can be compared side-by-side, as well as the ability to review sample policies. Here are my three sample plans for Turkey.
AIG Travel Guard also offers an annual travel plan. This plan costs $259 per year for a Florida resident.
What Is Travel Insurance And Is It Worth It?
Additionally, AIG Travel Guard offers several other policies, including a single trip policy without trip cancellation protection. For current details on COVID-19 coverage, see AIG Travel Guard's COVID-19 Notice and COVID-19 Advisory.
Normally, AIG Travel Guard will not cover you for any loss or expense due to a pre-existing medical condition that occurred within 180 days of the effective date of your coverage. However, AIG Travel Guard may waive the pre-existing medical condition exclusion on some plans if you meet the following conditions:
Allianz is one of the most popular providers in the TPG Lounge and many readers found the claims process to be reasonable. Allianz offers many plans, including the following one-off plans for my sample trip to Turkey.
If you travel frequently, purchasing a one-year multi-trip policy may not make sense. All of the maximum coverage amounts in the table below for this plan are for one trip (except for trip cancellation and trip interruption amounts, which are the total limits for each policy). Trips should not normally exceed 45 days, although some plans may cover trips of up to 90 days.
Travel Guard Travel Insurance
Most Allianz travel insurance plans can cover pre-existing medical conditions if you meet certain requirements. Requirements for OneTrip Premier, Prime and Basic plans are as follows:
American Express Travel Insurance offers four different package plans and the option to provide your own coverage. You do not need to be an American Express cardholder to purchase this insurance. Here are four package options for my week-long trip to Turkey. Unlike some other providers, Amex doesn't ask for your travel destination on the initial quote (but when you buy the plan).
Amex's own coverage plan is unique because you can buy the coverage you need. For most types of protection, you can choose the coverage amount that works best for you.
Prices for packages and your own plan do not increase for longer trips — the price of the trip remains constant. However, emergency medical and dental benefits are only available for the first 60 days of travel.
Types Of Insurance Policies And Coverage You Need
As a general rule, Amex will not cover any loss you incur due to a medical condition that occurs within 90 days of the effective date of coverage. However, Amex may waive its pre-condition if you meet both of the following requirements:
GeoBlue is different from most of the other providers described in this section because it only provides medical coverage while you are traveling internationally and does not offer benefits to protect the cost of your trip. There are many different policies. Some require you to have primary health insurance in the US (although it is not covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield), but all offer coverage only when traveling outside the US.
If you're traveling for six months or less, there are two-for-one travel plans. The Voyager Choice policy covers travel outside the US (including medical services and medical evacuation for a sudden recurrence of a pre-existing condition) for travelers who are 95 years of age or younger and have US health insurance.
The Voyager Essential policy provides coverage for travel outside the US to travelers age 95 or younger regardless of whether they have basic health insurance (including medical evacuation for a sudden recurrence of a pre-existing condition).
Travel Insurance Plan Sagicor
In addition to these options, two multi-trip plans each cover up to 70 days of travel per year. Both policies provide coverage (including medical services and medical evacuation) to travelers with basic medical insurance.
IMG offers various travel medical insurance policies for travelers as well as comprehensive travel insurance policies. There are five policy types available for leisure or leisure travelers for a trip of 90 days or less. Although you must enter your gender, men and women received the same amount of quotes for my weeklong search.
You can purchase an annual multi-trip travel health insurance plan. Some only cover trips lasting 30 or 45 days, while others cover longer trips.
Most plans may include terms for certain parameters or up to a certain amount. For example, the iTravelInsured Travel LX travel insurance plan shown above may include pre-existing conditions if you purchase coverage within 24 hours of making the final payment for your trip.
Best Family Travel Destinations Worldwide (vacation Inspiration)
Pre-conditions for travelers 70 years and younger are included for the travel health insurance plans listed above. But coverage is limited based on your age and whether you have a basic health insurance policy.
Travelex offers three travel plans: Travel Basic, Travel Select and Travel America. However, only Travel Basic and Travel Select plans can be used for my trip to Turkey.
As a general rule, Travelex does not cover losses due to medical conditions that occur within 60 days of the effective date of coverage. However, a Travel Select plan may offer a pre-existing condition waiver. To be eligible for this waiver, the insured traveler must meet all of the following conditions:
Seven Corners offers a variety of policies. Here are the policies that are most suitable for travelers on an international trip.
Family Friendly Holiday Insurance With Holidaysafe
Seven Corners also offers many other types of travel insurance, including an annual multi-trip plan. When purchasing an annual multi-trip plan, you can choose coverage for trips of up to 30, 45 or 60 days.
Normally, Seven Corners does not cover losses caused by a pre-existing medical condition. However, the RoundTrip Choice plan offers a pre-existing condition waiver. To be eligible for this waiver, you must meet all of the following conditions:
World Nomads is popular with young, active travelers due to its flexibility and inclusion of adventure in the Explorer plan. Unlike many policies offered by other providers, you don't need to factor in prepaid expenses when purchasing travel interruption and cancellation coverage.
World Nomads has a page dedicated to coronavirus coverage, so be sure to check it out before purchasing a policy.
