Toast the arrival of a spectacular sunset with a pelican picnic. Find your special place, open the champagne and enjoy a combination of cheese and charcuterie, fresh fruit, finger sandwiches and homemade sweets.
Starting February 12, resort guests can order their delicious basket via room service. A Pelican picnic will be held on a case-by-case basis. A deposit of $150 is required when ordering, which will be deducted when the picnic basket and blanket are returned. Over the past few years, these special wine dinners have grown in popularity. In the past, only the best restaurants in New York or Westchester hosted such prestigious events, and as I recall, they were all extremely expensive. It seems that the idea of these dinners was not only to offer a 5-6 course meal, pairing each course with a special and wonderfully matched wine, but also the restaurants wanted to make a nice profit that evening. And why aren't they?? These were small meetings with excellent dishes accompanied by desirable leading wines. This traditional sophisticated version of the wine dinner certainly still exists, but recently a new generation has emerged. Now those of us who can't afford to drop $500 on a single meal have a chance to enjoy a delightful culinary experience as well.
I recently attended one of these dinners at the TapHouse in Tuckahoe, where Moet Hennessy teamed up with owner Chris O'Brien and chef Kevin Bertrand to try to create a fun and well-thought-out wine selection menu. It seemed like a good way to sample a handful of the slightly more accessible MH wines in their portfolio, along with new and innovative culinary dishes prepared by the TapHouse team. They managed to get a little creative and come up with dishes that they wouldn't normally offer on a high-end gastropub menu. I've been to several of their beer pairing dinners, which are always great and offer an interesting perspective on beer and food pairings, but this was their first wine dinner. In short, these guys knocked it out of the park from start to finish, especially for only $65!
Wine & Dine
You could tell by the opening course that this was going to be a seriously sick menu, starting with Tuki-style oysters in jalapeno-infused strawberry water with a nice watermelon radish. The oysters were wonderfully light yet meaty, and the light strawberry flavor paired perfectly with the bubbles of Domaine Chandon Rose Brut. Pairing any food with sparkling wine is never easy, but these guys nailed it as the DC survivor came back to life after only tasting oysters.
Another highlight of the meal was roast beef served with celery puree over corn on the cob and blackcurrant risotto. The venison was tender, full of flavor and perfectly cooked. They chose the 2013 Newton Unfiltered Napa Cab for this course and as Yoda would say...choose wisely, they did! The tannins were surprisingly soupy for such a big and juicy wine, and of course the venison helps smooth it out. But the brilliant combination was the side of black currants, which when tasted together with all that extra delicate cab, just oozed flavor and catty goodness. A great way to end the main dishes that lead to the dessert finale.
I won't go into every dish here, although it's worth mentioning that there wasn't a single bad dish or wine to eat during the evening. So for $65, the Newton stand offered 5 courses (with generous portions) and 4 really solid wines with an outstanding killer wine. So you can enjoy a full meal for two for $130 (plus tax and tip), when the service is amazing and the dishes are handmade especially for the event. I don't know about you, but these days there aren't too many places where you can get a quality meal with wine for under $150.
So, if you see one of these special wine-cutting events at your favorite local restaurants, it's probably worth a visit, because attending one of these dinners can be cheaper than eating off the regular menu on a regular evening. Increasingly, these dinners are a form of marketing and advertising, where restaurants aren't so much about making a big profit on the night, but more about getting the word out about their restaurant's dynamite. Being I can't guarantee that everyone will be as good as the one at TapHouse, but in the end you have to be on the right side of an evening where the owner and chef will hopefully go out of their way to please their customers. keep them coming back for more.
