Southeast Asians—especially ruling elites—quickly saw the power of photography to influence understanding and communication. Photography became a site for the modern imagination. Through variations in setting, props, backgrounds and fashions, people who would sit for portraits could imagine their roles in a new, modern world.

Photography has always had a close and controversial relationship with reality. A picture does not show everything; pictures create new worlds, not by revealing reality but by explaining it. From the artistic manipulation of photographs to the "truth" of documentary, this section examines the shifting realities within the image frame of the photograph.

The 1970s saw more experimentation with the medium of photography as part of the larger turn to conceptualism and institutional critique in the fine arts. Photos were not yet reserved for important events or people. Instead, it was a site for reflection and experimentation, a place to figure things out.
