"navigating The Benefits Of Travel Insurance For Australian Travelers" - It doesn't take long when you're visiting with other travelers to see that everyone likes things a certain way.

Some travelers only fly Alaska Airlines. Others will not jump the red-eye. Others still have to have a gate seat.

Last month, I hosted several conferences, called Travel Forum, just to talk to travelers about where they are going, the trips they have made and to gather valuable tips on getting Great value for money on the trip.

Some topics continue, like the Alaska Air credit card with Bank of America, travel insurance and the actual value of frequent flyer points.

Many travelers ask about the recent changes to the Alaska credit card, especially the new requirements for getting a companion pass every year.

Many travelers, myself included, carry more than one of the cards specifically to take advantage of the companionship. When you buy a ticket at the best price, you can get a second ticket for $99, plus applicable taxes and fees. Those extras can push the final price to between $121 and $200.

Earlier this year, Alaska made changes to the program, including raising the annual fee to $95. But the big change is the $6,000 annual spending requirement for each card to get a companion pass.

However, current card holders are exempt. Only those applying for new cards will have to meet that minimum spending threshold.

But travelers are looking to other cards to earn miles and points. A traveler in Fairbanks likes Capital One's Venture card. The top-of-the-line Venture X card costs $395 per year. But that includes a $300 annual travel credit. New cardholders can earn a 75,000-mile bonus after spending at least $4,000 within 90 days.

Also, Capital One cardholders have access to the Priority Pass airport lounge program. Cardholders can transfer miles to 15 other partners, including British Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Wyndham hotels and Accor hotels.

Many travelers mention high hotel prices. That's where "soft finance" cards like Capital One, Chase and American Express come in handy.

Personal Benefits Of Travel: Why Travel?

However, one traveler revealed that getting a hotel membership card on its own is more profitable than collecting points. In your case, IHG (Intercontinental Hotel Group) is your favorite. He and his family got 13 free nights at the Holiday Inn Express in Puerto Vallarta using his points. The IHG family includes Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and Intercontinental Hotels.

All major hotel groups have their own cards: Hyatt, Bonvoy (Marriott and Sheraton) and Hilton rewards.

At an afternoon conference, a traveler lamented the death of the one-day pass for Alaska Air lounges. Last year, Alaska Air credit card holders could get a day pass to the lounge for $25. But an Alaska Airlines representative sitting in our meeting told us what we already knew: "There are a lot of people using the restrooms."

By raising the price for an annual membership and doing away with day passes, the airline hopes to thin the crowd.

In Fairbanks, a traveler is preparing for a 35-day trip around South America. Your question: "Should I buy cruise insurance?"

Well, you have to read a good book. If you are going on a long or unusual trip, it makes sense to check the travel insurance offering of the operator.

While reviewing a safari to Tanzania, I noticed the tour operator with a mandatory medical departure insurance plan. But travelers are urged to purchase a separate travel insurance policy for lost luggage, en route delays or flight cancellations and other items covered.

For many years, I have purchased an annual policy from Allianz. But there are many different policies for specific needs. For example, my annual plan does not include travel cancellation insurance. Other, more expensive plans include the option to cancel for any reason.

There are two websites that offer side-by-side comparisons of insurance plans, to help you decide which plan is right for you: InsureMyTrip.com and Squaremouth.com. Remember that most credit cards include some for travel insurance, including accident damage insurance for rental cars.

Many travelers also have sticker shock regarding car rental and hotel fees. On the car rental front, I have rented from Turo.com many times. It's the Airbnb of rental cars, allowing people to rent their own cars.

If car rental prices are high where you are going, you can recommend a Turo car while you wait to see if regular car rental prices will go down. Although Turo rates may show much higher prices than Avis and Hertz, pay attention to the extras, including the travel fee from Turo. Normally, the "all in" price will appear much lower.

If prices are close to departure, you can cancel a Turo reservation up to 24 hours before departure.

The high cost of the hotel is one reason I get miles and points. My preferred flexible credit card is the Chase family of cards. Hyatt is one of the transfer partners - and Chase offers an attractive conversion rate. That said, Hyatt's own credit card offers more rewards specifically for Hyatt and its affiliated brands.

Another popular topic with travelers is Alaska Air's decision to join an international alliance, made up of airlines including American, British, Qatar Air, Japan Airlines and Qantas.

The No. 1 benefit for travelers is that their Alaska Air Elite benefits move better than American Airlines. For example, MVP Gold travelers have access to American extra-leg seats at the time of booking at no extra charge.

Alaska's loyalty program goes beyond a chance, though. Travelers can earn-and-burn miles on many airlines outside the oneworld family, including Turkish Airlines, Singapore Air and Condor, among others.

When it comes to using miles, many travelers struggle. They want to use their miles but have to keep buying tickets in order to qualify for their elite status.

Taking care of their coffee mugs, all the travelers turned their heads when this topic came up. People with kids or grandkids often give them miles, so they can continue to transfer miles to their MVP status.

No one in the group seemed particularly upset at Alaska Air's decision to offer cheap Saver tickets at 30% of the actual miles flown. That process begins for tickets purchased after July 19. Genuine travelers don't often buy Reserve tickets because they're less flexible about seat assignments, changes and upgrades.

Our pop travelers are still curious - and they're planning trips all over the world. But they know what they like and don't mind working all the corners to get the right travel formula.
